6. AUBIGNY CASTLE

The castle of Aubigny is the former seat of the seigneury of the same name, which is then the largest of the territory of Cahagnes. It may have been created in the 13th or 14th century. The registers have too many gaps to go back beyond 1600. On February 8, 1650, Jacques de Novince, lord of Aubigny, was knighted. His coat of arms was azure to the golden lion, surmounted by a fasce in currency, likewise charged with three roses of mouths. This coat of arms was partly taken over by the municipality when the town coat of arms was created in 1974.

The current residence, built in the first half of the XVII th century, is the result of a total reworking of a dwelling dating from the XV th century, as evidenced by the presence of two of the four towers in posterior elevation (mouth to fire in two of the four towers). The bell in the turret dates back to a very remote time.

On the bell is inscribed: "MVcc IIIxxII (1952). Guillaume de Novince seigneur d'Aubigny, baron de Crépon, viscount d'Esquay, councillor and ordinary maître d'hôtel of the king and his mother, president of French finance in Normandy." At the time, the king was Henri III and his mother Catherine de Medici.

A "courtyard of honor", marked out to the west by a body of water as well as a barn of the fifteenth century, precedes the castle itself. According to the 1811 cadastre, it appears that only the access path has been modified in its width. The body of the house displays an elongated structure, with a ground floor in height and a floor for use as a cellar. A triangular pediment adorns the courtyard façade. Attached by two, the corner pavilions, obviously of the fifteenth century each equipped with a roof in pavilion, complete the composition of the whole.

After the 1914-1918 war, Aubigny’s lands were sold to various buyers. The Cahagnes mill, which was part of the estate, was also sold to a private individual.

During the Second World War, the Red Cross set up a hospital there. The priest said mass in front of 200 faithful. Young boys from Colombelles were welcomed there on holiday.

This castle is now private property.
